Eating disorders and addictions

Eating disorders and addictions can reinforce one another. Control, shame, numbing and compulsive behaviour can feature in both patterns.

Peggy-Sue looks at the whole picture: behaviour, emotions, the body, the person's environment and the role the pattern has come to play.

What is the relationship between eating disorders and addictions?

Eating, not eating, compensating or using substances can feel like a way to stay in control.

Over time, that control often diminishes while shame, isolation or physical exhaustion increases.

Addiction and disordered eating require careful support because they often attempt to numb the same underlying pain.

Focusing only on visible behaviour is then not enough; the underlying tension and beliefs also need attention.

Recognising the signs

Peggy-Sue helps arrange appropriate care and open up the conversation.

Loved ones can also receive support in setting boundaries, helping and remaining involved without reinforcing the pattern.
